Our Mommy Just Got Braces

September 15, 2011

After ten years of waiting, I could barely believe it this morning when I realized it was actually the big day: Braces Day. I actually felt a little sad saying goodbye to my crooked teeth and realizing that I’d never see them the same way again.

But on to better things. After seeing my big kids off to school and taking the little ones to the babysitter, I headed to Harrington Orthodontics in St. Joseph, MI. I had seen several orthodontists for consultations last year when I decided to get braces, but I was most impressed with Dr. Harrington. His office is bright, modern, and up-to-date, and he and his staff are very friendly and reassuring. Of all the offices I’d gone, I felt most comfortable and at home at Harrington.

Since it’s been a while since I’d had my initial consultation, we took a few minutes to take new photos and a plaster mold of my teeth. Then it was time for getting the brackets on. I was more than a little nervous when I got in the chair. Was this going to hurt?

As it turned out, the process was a little uncomfortable but not painful at all. The hardest part was holding still while Dr. Harrington and his assistant applied the bond and then adhered each bracket to a tooth, one at a time. In order to keep my gums away from my teeth, they had to insert these crazy looking metal utensils in my mouth to keep my lips open wide. And they had to blow air on my teeth to keep them dry so the adhesive would work right. Finally, after sitting there with my mouth open and my lips pulled wide apart for what seemed like hours, the brackets were on! Then Dr. Harrington’s assistant threaded a thin metal wire through each bracket. Dr. Harrington explained that the Damon System is different from traditional braces because when I came back they would just replace the wire with a stronger wire—but they wouldn’t have to actually “tighten” the braces because there are no rubber bands. His assistant clamped the ends of the wire and ta-da—I had braces!

Looking in the mirror for the first time was surprising. Since the top front brackets were clear, the braces weren’t nearly as noticeable as I had thought they would be. Dr. Harrington advised me take Tylenol or Advil a few times a day for the first week. This would help me stay on top of any soreness from the brackets rubbing on my gums or my teeth shifting around. His assistant showed me how to brush and floss with the braces on and gave me a little packet of information, samples of special floss for people with braces, and mouthwash.

So far, I feel pretty good. My teeth are a little sore when I eat, but nothing like what I had expected from all the people who insisted on telling me their teenage horror stories. As Dr. Harrington explained, the Damon System doesn’t put as much pressure on the teeth as the old braces most people remember. Instead of tightening bands that pull on the teeth, Damon uses a unique slide system that is a lot gentler and more comfortable.

I do feel a little weird. My mouth feels different with braces and I seem to have developed a bit of a lisp. I’m sure that will go away as I get used to talking with braces in my mouth. And it’s definitely worth it when I think about the straight teeth I’ll have soon!

My son Owen, who just turned five, is a little freaked out by my new teeth. But the rest of my kids haven’t even noticed yet. At first I was sure that everyone in the world would be staring at my mouth, but as it turns out they aren’t very noticeable at all. I’ve actually had to tell a few people that I finally got my braces on!

I’m so excited that I’m finally on my way to straighter teeth and a healthier, prettier smile.
Can’t you tell?

Congratulations!! I had my damon clear braces put on in June of this year 2011, and it has been almost four months and my teeth have moved quickly and drastically. I have never been so excited in my life. My treatment time is anywhere from 24-36 months. I can not wait to see my end results!!

Hello,
I am 45 and it is about time I do something about my teeth. My question is, will the bigger companies be using your system in the near future?
I live in Palm Springs, CA and the dentist who has your system is WAY over priced! Usually the independent dentist are always that way.
So, in this economy…I want options. Can you help?
Thanks

Hello,
My name is Carolyn. I am 51 and I got braces three weeks ago. I am surprised at the movement in three weeks. I am developing an overbite. I called in today just to make sure this was just part of the normal process. The ortho assistant said she felt it was fine and I could just keep my normal appointment. I can’t wait for my next appointment. I know the pain will start up again but the pain means progress and at 51 I am ready for progress.

Hi Miki!

My name is Alex and I am an Ormco employee … manufacturers of the Damon System.
As the manufacturer, we are not involved in setting retail prices for orthodontists, however, per our “Cost Of Braces” page at -> http://damonbraces.com/cost-of-braces/index.php :

How much do Damon Braces cost?
On average, braces cost anywhere between $3,800 and $8,000 depending on individual cases. Only your Damon Doctor can truly determine the cost of braces based on your specific needs. Factors that will influence the cost of braces are case difficulty, length of treatment, insurance coverage, region of the country and more.

To find other Damon provider options in your area, please refer to our Damon Doctor Locator at -> http://damonbraces.com/locator … if you enter “Palm Springs, CA”, then hit the Submit button … then go to “Advanced Search” and “Options” tab … select a 50 miles radius and you will see even greater Damon Doctor listings.

Hi Janet!

My name is Alex and I’m with Ormco … manufacturers of the Damon System.

Flossing with braces can take some getting used to, but it does get easier. We recommend you connect with your orthodontist about this since they are most familiar with your son. You may also want to check out the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQvoi7klzRs.

Also, although not required, some patients benefit from the use of a water pick.

Finally, there is a new kind of flosser out there called the Platypus at http://www.platypusco.com. They do have a pretty novel flosser that some patients seem to really like since it is specifically made for braces. If you try it out, let us know what you think!

Great to see your next post Meagan — back for my first appt. After my braces went on today! I’ve been amazed at how much I’ve felt they have moved — even in just 8 weeks with the initial “easy” wire in place. Power chains installed today … And elastics at night now! Back to being sore again …. But the good news is the red wine doesn’t seem to stain the brackets (with good brushing after anyway). The power chain will be a different story though … No curry for me for a bit.

Look forward to your continuing journey.

Penny

PS to others — love my waterpik — highly recommend picking one up!

Hey! I just got my braces today and I have Damon! They have a little pressure but that’s it. The only bad thing is not having colors on these. Sence I’m 14 I wanted clear not to see, you know high school, but everyone says I don’t even look bad and their super small! I love them!

I had my Damon braces put in April 2011 with clear up top, metal on the bottom. My ortho estimated 18 months and I come in every 4-6 weeks for a 5 mins wire replacement. I just had an appointment today and he said that I’m way ahead of schedule so I’m very likely to cut off a few months (just in time for my graduation, he says!). I’m 21, never had braces in my life, and decided to get them on my own because I waited too long to get my wisdom teeth pulled and I don’t regret them (except when I get them tightened of course).

The braces become second nature so smile wide and let the world know that you’re bettering yourself.
